Upgrading from Basic to Standard

When updating the public ip from basic to standard I have to dissociate the IP. When I do the update can I associate the same IP back to the VM?

Can I reach out to support if it fails? Is this going to create a case or is it just a Q&A?

Hi Andrew,

The IP stays the same, and once upgraded you may Associate it back to the VM. After upgrade is complete you may click Associate button on the public IP address Overview blade to link it back to the VM's network interface. Please see screenshot below in regards to IP being retained:

In addition to the points provided by @ TP, I would like to add a few more points:

Upgrading a public IP resource retains the IP address.

To change IP address assignment to Static, you must dissociate the Basic IP from the Azure resource

Dissociating a Dynamic Basic IP resource from the Azure resource will not retain the IP Address

So,

if you have basic IP with Static assignment - no issue, IP retains.

if you have basic IP with Dynamic assignment - IP does not retain

Note: changing IP from dynamic to static does not retain the IP.

In my experience you don't need to disassociate Basic IP from a VM in order to switch it from Dynamic to Static. I've done it many times successfully. The portal will display error message after changing it to Static, but the change is successful so message can be ignored.Also, IP address is retained when switching from Dynamic to Static every time I've done it.

Perhaps there are unique circumstances that I've not encountered that would change the results I've experienced. If you've seen specific case where you can't switch Basic IP from Dynamic to Static without disassociating it first I'd like to know details.

In the past I always cautioned people that when using Dynamic Public IP the address may change. Obviously if/when VM is Deallocated, but also some other random case, and if they really care about the IP staying same Static should be used.

Just to make sure I understand correctly. I do have the Public IP set to dynamic and I would like to keep the same public IP.

Should I change the dynamic IP to static before I disassociate the to do the update? By me doing this it will prevent the IP from changing?

A: Yes, please navigate to the Basic Public IP address -- Settings -- Configuration, select Static, click Save.

After several seconds you should see notification in upper right corner saying that it saved public IP changes.

A message will show up at top saying that "This public IP address can't be updated because it is associated to the IP configuration..", that's normal.

Click on Overview blade on left, next click on Properties tab and verify it still says Static. Hit F5 to refresh the page, and double-check Properties tab again (still should say Static).

Now you are ready to click Dissociate, make note of your VM's network interface name, then click Yes to confirm. Network activity from public Internet to your VM will be interrupted at this point.

Once that's done click the Upgrade to Standard SKU link at top, check box and Yes. Typically only takes seconds to upgrade, look for notification in upper right.

When upgrade has finished, click Associate , select Resource type: Network interface and select your VM's network interface from the dropdown. This is where the note you made above with your VM's network interface name may be helpful.
