Convert devices from Microsoft Entra registered to Microsoft Entra joined

Hi!

I am trying to convert devices that I already have in the Entra system as Microsoft Entra registered to Microsoft Entra joined but I can't find any solution. The computers are NOT personally owned computers and however the devices still have the Entra registered status.

Can you assist me with that issue ? How can I change from Entra registered to Microsoft Entra joined type?

I understand that you would like to convert the Entra registered to Entra joined device. The device is automatically Entra registered when a user logs on to an organizational application using their corporate identity.

To answer your question, as of now there is no option to convert the Entra registered to Entra joined device. If you want to achieve your ask you need to remove and re-enroll the device.

I understand that I need to manually disconnect local the user account from the device by going to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school. I’ve already removed the user both from Entra and locally, and I tried to follow the steps to enroll the user as Microsoft Entra joined instead. However, it doesn’t seem to work.

I would really appreciate your advice and some clear steps to achieve my goal: changing the Entra status for users who currently appear as Registered to Joined.

A few details that might help:

I’m using Windows 11 Home Edition, and the devices are not new.

I read in this Microsoft article that Microsoft Entra join is not supported on Windows Home Editions.

Does that mean I need to upgrade to Windows 11 Pro in order to join devices to Entra?

Also, I noticed that some users already have the Joined status, even though they’re using private (non-corporate) computers. To achieve the same, do I need to sign in on the user’s computer using the root Microsoft company account, and then switch to their corporate email afterward?

I understand that you've removed the Entra registration, but the device is still showing status as Entra registered. Please note that it may take some time for the de-synchronization process to complete. You can try again after some time and restart your device.

Regarding your other question: Microsoft Entra Join can be configured on all Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices, except for the Home editions. You can check the list of supported devices for Microsoft Entra Join.

The reason you're not seeing the "Join this device to Azure Active Directory" option is likely because you're using a Home edition of Windows. This option is not available on Home editions as it is not supported for Entra Join. Please try using a different edition (such as Pro or Enterprise) and check if the option becomes available. Also, if you have any other Microsoft accounts added to the device, please remove them and restart the device. This may help the option to appear.

Also additionally If the Windows 10 or Windows 11 device already joined to on-premises Active Directory then you will not get the Azure AD join option because you would need to perform Hybrid Azure AD join in that case using either of below methods:

Configure hybrid Azure Active Directory join for federated domains

Configure hybrid Azure Active Directory join for managed domains

You can try using below commands to join Azure AD and check the status using powershell:

DsRegCmd /join

DsRegCmd /status

For debugging errors, you can check below event logs:

Event Viewer > Application and Services logs > Microsoft > Windows > User Device Registration > Admin

For additional Information you can follow: Microsoft Entra Joined devices , Microsoft Entra Join Implementation
