How to make event triggered retention label works

I cannot make event triggered retention label to work. I followed the steps to create retention label with event type, applied retention label to contents and assign the content with asset ID, create event with time and scope (asset ID) using the ComplianceAssetID <value> format, but nothing happened. The retention labels are published, and event occur date was same date I created event, could you please let me know how to troubleshoot or what are the prerequisite that will make it work? Also what are the steps to run a content search for AssetID's in ediscovery?

Hi @Gift Since you mentioned that you followed the steps (created an event-driven label, assigned ComplianceAssetID, created the event, etc.) but nothing happened.

A few things to keep in mind when troubleshooting event-triggered retention labels:

    • Processing time: After you create an event, it can take up to 7 days for Microsoft 365 to apply the retention settings to the content. It's not immediate.
    • ComplianceAssetID matching: Double-check that the ComplianceAssetID you assigned to the content exactly matches the AssetID you specified in the event (it’s case-sensitive).
    • Check in Content Explorer or Audit logs: These can help you verify if the event triggered any actions.
    • Permissions: Make sure your account has the right roles (like Compliance Administrator) to manage retention and events.

To run a content search by Asset ID in eDiscovery:

Create a search using this query:

    ComplianceAssetId:"<your-asset-id>"

(Note: It's "ComplianceAssetId" — casing matters.)

If you’ve verified all of the above and still don’t see any action after a few days, it might be worth opening a Microsoft Support ticket to dig deeper on the backend processing side.

You can also check out this Microsoft documentation for more info: Event-driven retention overview.

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.
