Azure Cost Spike on Specific Day Each Month Despite No New Deployments or Purchases

We’ve received several client queries regarding unexpected cost spikes on a single day each month (e.g., 14th April 2025), even though there were no new deployments, reservations, or resource changes on that day. Audit logs confirm no activity, and reservation usage is aligned correctly with running resources.

Key Observations:

• The Cost by Resource panel shows a new entry labeled “Other Microsoft Products” starting February 2025 onwards.

This entry references a reservation order resource ID (e.g., /providers/microsoft.capacity/reservationorders/...) with VM-related charges.

The charge appears to align with existing reservations, and the cost is now displayed entirely on one day each month (matching the reservation purchase date).

• Prior to February, the portal did not show this pattern – reservation charges were more evenly distributed.

Starting February 2025, Azure began displaying reservation charges as a single, upfront cost on the reservation purchase date, rather than distributing the cost evenly over the reservation term. This change is evident in the Cost by Resource panel, where a new entry labeled “Other Microsoft Products” appears, referencing reservation order resource IDs (ex: /providers/microsoft.capacity/reservationorders/...) with VM-related charges. This adjustment aims to align cost reporting with actual billing practices, providing a more accurate reflection of expenses.

The categorization of these charges under "Other Microsoft Products" is due to the way Azure classifies reservation orders in its billing system. While this label may seem ambiguous, it encompasses various Microsoft services, including reservations. This classification change coincided with the February 2025 updates to Azure Cost Management.

Currently, there is no supported method to revert to the previous behavior of distributing reservation costs evenly across the month within the Azure portal.
