Cannot open Authenticator app to enter code, as the code is in the app

Question

When repeatedly attempting to add an account in Outlook Mobile app and finally reaching the verification, I get the code to enter in the Authenticator but CANNOT OPEN IT BECAUSE THE APP IS OPEN WITH THE SCREEN SHOWING THE CODE TO ENTER. I tried to use another method to get a code, but that doesn't work either. Help!! I have spent several hours trying various ways to resolve.
