Microsoft Word keeps shutting down, showing a Microsoft Error report 'EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION' on my Mac OS X 15.5

My Microsoft Word suddenly quits when I am working (mostly within one minute). Mostly, it's when I'm deleting text or pasting some text or when saving the file.

I get the following Microsoft Error report:

Error Signature:

Exception: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION

ExceptionEnumString: 2

Exception Code: 0x00000001 (0x0000000000000000)

Crashed Module Version: 16.97.25051114

I have removed all my Microsoft apps, redownloaded them (logged in and out), but this is not helping.

Does anybody has an idea how to fix this issue? Now, I cannot work with Microsoft Word

Hi @Tiekink, E.H. (Eveline)

Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

I understand you're experiencing frequent crashes with Microsoft Word. Although, I haven't used Word on a Mac before, I hope these ways can help you out.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to fix the issue:

  1. Start Word in Safe Mode: Hold Shift while opening Word to prevent add-ins from loading.
  2. Delete Word Preference Files (macOS):
    • Close Word.
    • Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + G, and paste ~/Library/Preferences/.
    • Find and delete the file: com.microsoft.Word.plist.
  3. Create a Brand New Document: Open a brand-new Word file.
  4. Update Microsoft Word: Go to Help > Check for Updates inside Word.
  5. Perform a Clean Office Uninstall using the Official Tool: Use the official Office Removal Tool (for Mac), then reinstall from [Office.com].
  6. Create a New User Account (macOS).

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
