Charging a Surface Pro 7

I have a Surface Pro 7; the charger started playing up so I bought a power pack/charger from the MS shop. It is quite a bit heavier than the one that came with my Surface Pro, and the flex is a little thicker. It is a 127w Power supply, and the box says it is for a Surface Book. Can I safely use this on my surface Pro 7?

Is it a Surface Pro 7?... "Surface Pro 2017 (SP5); a 1796. Surface model: Surface Pro (5th Gen) Model 1796 i5

If you run the Surface App, it should tell you what model this is. 1796 is usually a SP 2017 5th generation, but a few SP6 devices were also labelled model 1796. Both (except M3 models) shipped with a 44 Watt power supply. Microsoft has not had a 44 W replacement available for longer than I can remember and tells customers to buy the 65 W.

Further https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/microsoft-surface-127w-power-supply/8m9zfxkg88d8?activetab=pivot:techspecstab states the following for compatibility and note that it states compatible with ALL SURFACE DEVICES:

    Marrion,

Waiting for you response as to the source of this information:

as this may affect the battery deterioration of the device.

Surface has circuitry to protect it from overcharging, etc. Here is a quote from the Surface folks:

"There's firmware in the device and hardware in the PSU itself to identify the PSU to the device, as well as determine what the optimum charging current would be."

    Hi JeffGoatcher,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community.

The Surface Pro 7 comes with the 65w charger and the 127w was for the Surface Book 3 15" (How to charge Surface). Yes, you may use the 127w on the Surface Pro 7 but we highly recommend that we use the charger with the same power supplied with its bundled charger or closer as this may affect the battery deterioration of the device. See this page: Care for Surface Battery

For the last question, you may confirm the model of Surface you have by:

Select the Start button, type system information, and select it from the list of results. The model info for your Surface will appear next to System Model. You can also use the Surface App by selecting Your Surface. The model information is listed next to SKU.

    Marrion,

Microsoft sells a 65W power supply as the universal replacement for the 36W power supply that came bundled with the Surface Pro 3 and some Surface Pro 4's, etc. Are you confirming that this has caused the battery deterioration that has occurred with SP3 and SP4 devices reported in this forum?

What is your source for the information that using the 127W supply on a device that shipped with 44W supply may deteriorate the battery? Why would Microsoft sell the 127 W charger as compatible with all Surface devices without noting battery deterioration might occur?
