Surface app crashes on launch

Hi,

I just bought a surface pro 8 and the surface app is crashing right after launch. I've tried to repair, reset and even uninstall and reinstall the app in the settings within the Apps & Features section in vain.

However, after some testing, I found that there seems to be a correlation between the Surface app and the Surface Managemement Extension causing the app not to work. Here is what I found:

In one of my tests, I uninstalled both apps, only reinstalled the Surface app and reinstalled the Surface Management Extension afterwards. It started working just fine with the exception that the "Smart Charging" widget was not present.

I then went and tried to reset the Surface Management Extension within the Apps & Features settings. When I launched the Surface app, it opened and I could see the "Smart Charging" widget; it looked like everything was back to normal but then the app crashed again 10 seconds after opening it.

Obviously, I made sure that everthing was up to date.

I went on multiple forums and tried everything and as you can see, nothing seems to work.

Thank you in advance for your help :)

    Hi WILDPINKPIGGY,

Greetings! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear about the crashing issue on your Surface App. Just to confirm, after the Surface App crashes, does it display an error message?

Please run the System File Checker **** then check if there are errors**.** Try to also replicate the crashing issue of the app using a user account in your Surface, see article for reference: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows.

Let me know if the issue also happens in a user account.

    Hi John Neil_J,

There is no error message displaying after the app crashes.

I ran the System File Checker and there aren't any errors, eveything is fine.

I also created a local user AND a local administrator account and both have the same issue no matter what.

As I mentionned in my first message, when I uninstall both the Surface app and the Surface Management Extension and reinstall them, the app seems to run fine but the smart charging widget is not apearing as you can see in this picture:Image

When I repair or reset the Surface Management Extension in the Apps & Features Settings, the app opens and I can see the smart charging widget. However, the screen is frozen (I cannot interact with anything) and the neither the Surface Type Cover nor the Surface Slim Pen 2 appear at the bottom. After arround 5 to 10 seconds the app crashes (I'm unable to take a screeshot).

I was wondering if you had any other suggestions that I could try or if there were any other way to enable Smart Charging?

I have a Surface Laptop Studio and am experiencing the exact same thing, and that it also just started recently.

The app starts, shows the welcome screen, then I click on the "Let's Go" button and the app crashes.

I know for a fact that it was working fine just a couple of weeks ago (I last ran it on May 6th).

I'm sorry to hear that the issue continues to happen after the troubleshooting methods.

Try to also go to Windows Settings > Apps > Select Surface app then click Advanced options. Disable or turn off Background apps then turn off the device while it's turned on. Press the power button for 30 seconds while the device is on. > Check if the issue still persist.

For the Smart Charging, see article: Smart charging on Surface (microsoft.com).

Smart charging is always active and turns on automatically when it detects your device is plugged in for prolonged periods or used at elevated temperatures.
