All of a sudden, individual pictures in Screenshots will not open on my Surface Pro 6.

All of a sudden, when I click on any particular file/picture I receive the message "You'll need a new app to open this ms-paint link." Below that is "Look for an app in the Microsoft Store." This has never happened before.

I searched under default apps and do not see this file. Which app would this be in the Microsoft Store (which is not opening)? Please help.

    Hi AnnMG26,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with opening image files on your Surface Pro 6, specifically the ones stored in your Screenshots folder. The message indicating that you'll need a new app to open the "ms-paint link" suggests that the file associations might be misconfigured or that the apps typically used to open images are not functioning correctly.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

    1. Default Apps Settings:
    • Go to **Settings > Apps > Default apps.
    • Scroll down and click on Choose default apps by file type.
    • Look for the file extensions of the screenshots in question (like .png, .jpg, etc.) and ensure they are associated with Photos or another image viewer like Paint, depending on your preference.
    1. Reset Default Apps:
    • In the Default apps section, scroll down and click Reset to reset to Microsoft recommended defaults. Then, try opening your images again.

If changing file associations doesn’t resolve the issue, you might need to repair or reset the built-in apps.

    1. Open Settings:
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
    • Scroll through the list to find Photos or Paint.
    • Click on it, and select Advanced options.
    • From here, you can choose to Repair or Reset the app. Repairing will attempt to fix any issues without deleting your data.

I hope this helps. If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely
