Hello.

I have a surface laptop 4, and recently purchased a keyboard cover for it(the material mentioned was thermoplastic polyurethane). I heard that keeping it on while the laptop is closed is potentially harmful for the screen, especially with it being a touchscreen. Is this true?

Here is a link to the product if that's helpful: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082K9GY95/ref=tsm_1_fb_lk?th=1

    Hi Yasmine.hs,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We appreciate for sharing your concern to us.

Regarding the possible negative effects of utilizing a thermoplastic polyurethane keyboard cover on a Surface Laptop 4, I was unable to locate any particular information. TPU-Clear, on the other hand, is a chemically improved plastic that is renowned for having qualities like greater hardness, flexibility, and scratch resistance. Additionally, it serves as a screen protector material.

In general, it’s important to keep your Surface Laptop clean and well-maintained to prevent any damage. Microsoft recommends using a soft lint-free cloth dampened with a little bit of mild soap and water, or screen wipes, to clean the touchscreen and keyboard frequently. They also advise keeping your Surface covered when you’re not using it. For more details, see Clean and care for your Surface - Microsoft Support.

If you are concerned about potential damage, you may want to consider removing the keyboard cover before closing the laptop lid.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

    Hello Lavenia,

Thank you so much for responding to my question!

I have already been removing the keyboard cover whenever I close my laptop, but it's been impractical to do on a daily basis, hence why I was asking if it the damage was a possibility.

I will keep on doing so until I have a definite answer, as I really don't want to risk my laptop screen.

    Thanks again!

    Yasmine

    You're welcome, Yasmine.hs.

No evidence exists to support the claim that using a keyboard cover could harm your Surface laptop.

The use of keyboard covers on laptops has both advantages and disadvantages. While some people think keyboard covers can shield the keyboard from dirt, debris, and small spills, others consider they can obstruct the performance of the machine. I advise ceasing to use the keyboard cover if your laptop security is truly that important to you. Follow the instructions in the support article I shared to clean your Surface device's keyboard correctly.
