Surface Pro 7 via HDMI to Ultrawide Monitor

Hi All

I have a Surface Pro 7 with a Surface dock and an LG 38GN950 38" Ultrawide display.

I use the only display port on the monitor to connect my PC so that just leaves me the HDMI to connect the Surface with so I'm using a mini display port to HDMI adapter out of ther dock into and HDMI cable into the monitor.

The problem is that I don't seem to be able to set the resolution of the Surface on my display past the 2736x1826 of the Surface and it just doesn't look great on the monitor regardless of monitor settings / stretch/fit settings etc. Is there any way of getting the surface to display at the 3840x1600 the monitor can handle via the HDMI setup I'm using?

Thanks

jim

    Hi JimStarling,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community and I'm sorry to hear about the issue that you are having with the external display for your Surface Pro 7. We'll work together to find out the what's causing this issue.

May I know how is the Surface display projected to the LG monitor? Is it on Extend, Second screen only or Duplicate? It seems that it is set to just Duplicate since the resolution of the Surface display which is at 2736x1824 is being duplicated to the LG monitor. Please try first set the projection to either Second screen only or Extend then see if it resolves the issue. Press Windows keys + P to select the said options.

Hope this helps but if not please reply back for us to assist you further.

    Hi, thanks.

I have it set to second screen only which is how I intend to use it.

    Hi JimStarling,

    Thank you for the response.

May I know what is the refresh rate used by the monitor?

The dock that you are using is the Surface Dock (1) , right? See: Identify your Surface Dock and features (microsoft.com)

Please try to lower the refresh rate of the monitor to 30Hz then see if it allows you to select a higher resolution. When connecting your Surface to monitors through Surface Dock, the maximum refresh or screen resolution through the mini-DisplayPort will be 4096 x 2160 @30Hz or 2960 x 1440 @60Hz, even if the device capabilities exceed this. Check also this page for more troubleshooting: Troubleshoot connecting Surface to a second screen (microsoft.com)

    Hi

    It’s the Surface Dock.

Monitor refresh rate is currently set to 144hz so I will try at 30hz.

I have now tried at 30hz but still the maximum I can show is 1920x1080
