My SD card keeps disconnecting on its own on my surface pro 5th gen

it began 4 days ago when i pressed safely eject expecting it to eject just my sandisc USB as I had forgotten my SD card was in too. It ejected them both. Since then it randomly disconnects. I have installed the latest updates on Thursday night and it was doing fine on Friday and did not disconnect. Today it disconnected once again while I was attempting to open up sims 4 on it. It has disconnected while playing causing me to lose my data. i wondered if it had anything to do with the game being installed on it but it had been doing this a day before I installed it. and also disconnects randomly when I'm not playing. My Sd card has 238 GB with 181 Gb used.

    Hi Sarah Z1,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry for the trouble this has caused you.

I understand that you're having trouble with your Surface pro 5th in which the SD card disconnects randomly. I am here to help and let us work on this together.

It's possible that the SD card driver is the only problem here. To troubleshoot, kindly follow these procedures, then check to see if the problem persists:

Force the device to shut down and restart.

Press and hold down the power button until your Surface shuts down and restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (about 20 seconds), then release the power button.

Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows updates including optional updates available.

See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)

To check for updates: Go to Settings >> Update and Security >> Windows updates >> Check for updates. For optional updates, click Advanced options then select optional updates.

Run the system file checker to check if there are corrupted system files that are just looping around causing this kind of issue to exist. See Using System File Checker in Windows - Microsoft Support.

    Update drivers and firmware

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version. On the search box type Winver and hit the enter key.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro. Then click the link next to Surface Pro 5 then click Download on the next page. Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

I hope these helps. Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

    Hi Lavenia,

Thanks so much for your assistance. I removed files off the SD card last night and it seemed to help and has not disconnected since then. I now have followed all the steps you gave me. After running the file checker the program said corrupt files were found and repaired, is there a way to confirm if it was my SD card? I will monitor the issue over the next couple of days to see if it has been solved and create a new question if the problem persists.

    Thank you!

If the issue does not recur, your SD card is probably to blame; there may be corrupted files on there that are hidden and are just looping, which is what is causing this kind of issues.

I'm happy that it's fixed now and I'm hoping that the problem won't recur. I value the time and effort you have given out in trying to resolve the problem.
