finding surface book model number

It's easy! Just click start, type system information . . . . wait.

The reason I want to know this is because the power supply is dead due to a dysfunctional battery. Swelled up like a balloon. So clicking start is out of the question because turning it on it out of the question.

I looked up the order number. The records tell me everything except model number. There are web sited that claim to be able to find the model number from the serial number. But they are just ports into the Microsoft lookup system that, again, tells me everything except model number.

Seriously? I'm investigating the cost of a replacement keyboard, but to insure compatibility I have to know the model number and that is the one thing Microsoft won't tell me. This is no way to run a railroad. Does there exist a way to find the model number without turning the laptop on?

Maybe How to replace a Surface Book keyboard | Lance Bledsoe will help

If you go to Surface Recovery Image Download (microsoft.com) and enter your serial number without entering the model number, the information displayed includes the product info including model (no number). That will verify whether you have an original Surface Book, a SB2, or SB3.

    Sample below.

Note that Microsoft does not sell the keyboard base separately. Some people have had luck finding them on eBay, but there is no official support for doing this.
