I bought the Surface laptop in 2015 and gave it to my friend 2 years later. I deleted the device from my account and haven't saved the recovery key. Any chance I can get the recovery key as my friend has problems with the laptop now.

    Hi MichellePang96,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you’re facing an issue with your Surface laptop, and I’m here to help!

    • Will you please confirm which Surface device do you have?

Unfortunately, if you have deleted the device from your account and have not saved the recovery key, there is no way to retrieve it. The recovery key is a unique code that is generated when you set up BitLocker on your device, and it is used to unlock your device in case you forget your password or encounter other issues.

Microsoft support is unable to provide, or recreate, a lost BitLocker recovery key.

In this case, your friend may need to perform a factory reset on the device to bypass the recovery screen. You’ll need to reset your device using one of the Windows recovery options. Resetting your device will remove all of your files.

The information can be found at Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
