Connecting camera to surface pro 4

I have tried various USB cables and am unable to get my Nikon D3100 connected to my surface pro. Does it need a driver or something? I notice a surface is not so easily compatible with alot of things and beginning to think it was a waste of money.  Hopefully there is an answer and I can actually use the the apps I've had to purchase to do things on this pc.

I have the same camera - not enough power!

All Surface devices have underpowered USB ports and you will most likely have to get a USB SD card reader and read your photos and videos via the SD card instead of a direct-connect to the tablet with the camera.
