High Definition Audio controller not working - Surface Pro 3

Help, I recently bought a mini display adapter to hdmi and plugged in my Sp3 to my tv. It displayed video but no audio. I thought it was the cable at first, but tried another surface pro 3 and it worked fine ruling out the cable as bad. I then checked out my device manager and noticed that one of my High Definition Audio Controller had a yellow ! next to it. Things I have tried are:

  1. verified I am fully up to date with Windows updates
  2. uninstalled both HDAC's and restarted, also removed both and scanned for hardware changes.
  3. Turned sp3 off, and then on again by pressing up on volume and verifying that the TPM is not disabled - it is not and is enabled.
  4. Ran troubleshooting in control panel for audio issues
  5. Looked on Microsoft support website to see if i could install update

is there a way i can download the drivers for the sp3 somewhere and manually override what's currently on my surface pro 3? Thanks!

    Hi,

One possible cause of this issue is missing or outdated drivers. To isolate the issue, could you tell us the made and model of your mini display adapter? To answer your query, you can download the latest firmware for Surface Pro 3 on this link. For detailed information about Surface Pro 3 update history, you may refer to this support article.

I dont believe that is the issue, as I have a friends surface pro 3 which works, and the version of the audio driver is older than mine which is fully updated. I copied his  High definition audio controller drivers onto a thumbdrive, and plugged it into my surface pro 3, and installed it from the 'have disk' option. this actually worked - audio was playing from the cable and the ! went away - but - once i restarted my surface pro 3, that driver was overwritten by the newer\bad one and my problem started over again.

It seems like i need to revert to an older realtek audio driver, but Windows 10 keeps overwritting it, despite the older one working. i've tried copying and pasting the drivers on the C drive where the newer one is located, but i cant get the permissions to work.

I obviously want windows10 updates, but i wish i could stop it from auto reverting back to the newer audio driver, when i want the older one.

Drivers are automatically installed so that you don't have to select which updates are needed. If a specific driver causes an issue that affect your device, you can prevent that from reinstalling automatically by following the steps on this support article.
