March last year I purchased a surface laptop go 2, and it only lasted 2 hours the entire year I had it. Eventually, I had to get a refurbed surface laptop go 2 due to technical issues under warranty, it still has a 2 hour battery life. Why does this happen?

    Hi A.Nguyên,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We appreciate for sharing your concern to us.

I am aware that you're having trouble with your Surface laptop Go 2's battery life. I am here to help and let us both isolate the issue. Allow me to ask a question to help us further isolate the issue.

    • May I know what build version of Windows are you currently running?

Estimates of what the battery life could be, based on typical device usage, are available at Surface battery testing and estimated performance - Microsoft Support.

As battery life varies significantly with settings, usage and other factors. If your device is within several hours of this target, this may be considered normal for your workload. Surface devices with lithium -ion batteries will experience changes in battery life over time. Like all batteries, lithium-ion cells are consumables that age and deteriorate over time and with usage.

Kindly try the following steps below to troubleshoot your device.

Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check any pending updates available including optional updates.

See: Fix common Surface problems using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (microsoft.com)

    Check the power mode slider.

Disconnect the Surface from the power supply.

Open Settings > system > Power and battery and ensure the Power mode is set to Recommended.

If you need to use the device for an extended period of time while on battery, the slider should be set to Battery saver.

Check app usage. Unnecessary running programs can cause slow system behavior, consume battery and affect overall stability for the PC.

Open Settings > System > Power and Battery. Select Last 24 hours and then select an hour of high consumption.

Look for apps that are using a lot of battery power. If you're not using them, you should close those unused apps.

If the apps start automatically, openTask Manager and then select the Startup tab. For any apps you don't want to start automatically, you can select the app, then select Disable. For more info see Change which apps run automatically at startup in Windows.

If you're using the apps that use a lot of battery power, you might want to plug in your Surface while using those apps to help get the most from your battery over time.

Check Battery saver settings. Battery saver extends battery life and by limiting background activity and push notifications.

Open Settings > System > Power and Battery. Check that Turn battery saver on automatically is enabled and that is is set to at least 20%. Also ensure that Lower screen brightness while in Battery saver is also enabled.

    Run Power troubleshooter.

From the Search box, enter "Troubleshoot power" and then open Find and fix problems with your computer's power setting.

Manually update the drivers and firmware for your Surface.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Laptop. Then click the link next to Surface Laptop Go then click Download on the next page. Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

Observe your device battery performance and see if it makes any difference.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
