Surface Keypad Doesn't Respond to Clicks

Recently, I turned on my computer (Surface Pro 6 w/ Cover) to try to get some work done and the mouse was not functioning properly. The mousepad's hovering and gliding is fine (you can move the mouse around, scroll, and use light taps to click on things), but attempting to click on any part of the mousepad does not work. I have looked into updating drivers as well as the ease of access settings, but none of this is working. Any thoughts?

    Hi 803chris,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community and posting your inquiry.

We suggest the methods below to troubleshoot the issue:

    • Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update.
    • Try cleaning the mousepad area and see if the issue is caused by dust and dirt.
    • Run the System File Checker.
    • Disable Mouse trails. Go to the mouse settings > additional mouse settings > Pointer Options Tab > under visibility, uncheck the tick box to disable the display pointer trails.
    • Refresh the mouse driver by going to 'Device Manager' then look for 'Mice and other pointing devices' and double-click > Right-click on "HID-compliant mouse" then select 'Uninstall' once uninstalled, restart your Surface.
    • Change the mouse sensitivity through control panel settings. Go to search bar > Search for  Control Panel > click on Hardware and Sound, then click onMouse (under **Devices and Printers). >**In **Mouse Properties,**go to pointer options > Adjust the sensitivity slider of the mouse pointer. > Check the tick box for Enhance pointer precision.
    • Install the drivers package. Check the specific OS build of your Windows SettingsSystemAboutDownload the driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 6 and click download on the next page. Please choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next. After the download, runand installthe .msi then Restart the Surface Device.

    Hello 803chris,

Thanks for posting your concern here. We're sorry to learn about this issue on your device.

In this case, please try to Force a shut down and restart your Surface. It resets the hardware and clears all the cache and memory for your hardware. Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check for Windows Update.  Run System File Checker in Windows 10. Then boot your device to UEFI and see if the issue persists there. See How to get to the UEFI settings on a Surface for more details. Once you're in UEFI, test the touchpad and see if it responds or not. If it does not respond in UEFI, then we know it's already a hardware failure on the type cover.

For any hardware related issue, kindly contact Microsoft Surface Support to seek exchange options for your keyboard. If you're located outside United States, see Global Support. Replacement cost applies to out of warranty device and for further service.

Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes by simply replying on this thread.

    StevenK
