Update taking more then 24 hours

My surface book has had the same black screen and liy up keybored for the last 24 hours. I understand that this is a sign that the surface book is updating as already told, however the laptop was kept on for the last 24 hours and overnight and is still in the same situiation - black screen and when you touch the keypad the keyboard lights up. I have trued a hard reboot, and tried to power it on and off but there has been no sign of change. It is not been an entire day, it is very fustrating as have work to do but due to the black screen I cant even tell how far along the update is and even if it is updating. 

Please do let me know how I can ifx this issue

    Hi,

    Did you correctly force shutdown your device?

    This is what you should do to force shut down a Surface.

    Step 1:    Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds and then release it.Step 2:    Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the sametime for at least 15 seconds and then release both.The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttonsdown for at least 15 seconds.Step 3:    After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.Step 4:    Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on.
