How to fix driver failure with Intel Smart Sound Technology driver on Surface Book?

Since taking the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update my Surface Book does not recognize the onboard audio and shows an error with the Intel Smart Sound Technology OED driver.  In the event viewer, I can see the following error:

Device INTELAUDIO\DSP_CTLR_DEV_9D70&VEN_8086&DEV_0222&SUBSYS_00000022&REV_0001\4&a4c0fcf&0&0800 had a problem starting.

Driver Name: oem25.inf

Class Guid: {4d36e97d-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Service: IntcOED

Lower Filters:

Upper Filters:

Problem: 0xA

Problem Status: 0xC0000365

I have tried rebooting, disabling and enabling the driver and uninstalling (and deleting) and reinstalling the driver with no help.  I've also tried disabling and re-enabling the onboard audio in the UEFI settings but no luck.

The hardware troubleshooter does recognize the failed driver but does not offer a solution.

Any help?

    Hi Renee,

This usually happens when the audio driver gets corrupted. Rolling back the driver may resolve the issue.

To do that, follow these steps:

    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click Intel Smart Sound Technology OED driver, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Drivers tab.
    4. Click Roll Back Driver.
    5. In the Driver Package rollback dialog box, click Yes.

If issue still persists, force shutdown your device.

    1. Press and hold the power button on your Surface for 30 seconds and then release it.
    2. Press and hold the volume-up button and the power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds. 3. After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds. 4. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.

You may also try to restore your device to an earlier point in time.

    1. Select the Start  button, then type control panel in the search box next to the Start button on the taskbar and select Control Panel (Desktop app) from the results.
    2. Search Control Panel for Recovery, and selectRecovery > Open System RestoreNext.
    3. Choose the restore point related to the problematic app, driver, or update, and then select Next > Finish.
