Remove Keyboard from "Safely remove Hardware"

Hello,

I have a Surface with a HID keyboard. The "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" button in the tray shows the keyboard as "Eject Surface HID Keyboard". How can I get rid of that entry? I do not want to detach or disable the keyboard. I only want to get rid of that unnecessary entry.

Thank you

Sandisha

    Hi Sandisha,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. I understand that you want to remove the "Eject Surface HID Keyboard" entry from the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" button in the tray of your Surface.

First, I would like to clarify on the model of your Surface. Is this a Surface Go or what? See this page for reference: Find out which Surface model you have - Microsoft Support

What version of Windows is your Surface running on? Windows 10 or Windows 11?

For now, kindly try these steps below and see how it goes:

    1. Right-click on the taskbar and select "Taskbar settings."
    2. Scroll down to the "Notification area" section and click on "Select which icons appear on the taskbar."
    3. Find the "Windows Explorer" option and toggle it off.

    Kind regards,
    Marrion

    Hello,

thank you for your answer. I have a Surface Pro 9 with an ARM processor.

I do not want to get rid of the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in tray. I know how to do that. I want it to appear when I attach USB drives but only then. I want to get rid of the keyboard entry that is unnecessary and makes the icon appear always.

    Hi Sandisha,

Thank you for confirming the model of your Surface and for clarifying the concern. I understand that you just want to remove the "Eject Surface HID Keyboard" without disabling the keyboard and not removing the entire "Safely remove Hardware" icon on the system tray. Kindly try these steps below then see how it goes to remove the "Eject Surface HID Keyboard" entry:

    1. Right-click on the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" button in the tray.
    2. Select "Customize notification icons" from the menu.
    3. In the "Notification Area Icons" window, find the "Surface Type Cover" entry.
    4. Click on the drop-down menu next to the "Surface Type Cover" entry and select "Hide icon and notifications".
    5. Click "OK" to save the changes.

This will remove the "Eject Surface HID Keyboard" entry from the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" button in the tray on your Surface Pro 9.

Let me know how it goes.

    Kind regards,
    Marrion

    Hello,

thank you for your answer. I do not have a "Surface Type Cover" entry and nothing that sounds similar.

    Any other options?
