    Transfer Texts to Duo

    1. In the Microsoft Store search for the "contacts & message backup" app and install it on the phone.
    2. On the Windows phone, search all setting for contacts & message backup.  SD card must be installed to launch.
    3. Launch and select MMS + SMS and launch.
    4. Click Backup, stored in SD card.  Backup should start looking for MMS and SMS messages.
    5. Make sure signed into OneDrive and choose to save the file to OneDrive for transfer to the Surface Duo.  It should be a .msg file.
    6. On the Surface Duo, open OneDrive, find the file, a click Download to begin the process to move it to the Duo.
    7. Open the Convert SMS from Windows Phone PRO app.
    8. Select Convert SMS.
    9. Click OK and select the downloaded file which should be a .msg files.   Select the SMS file first, then CONVERT ALL, and back it up.  Then do the same for the MMS file.
    10. Launch SMS Backup and Restore to restore the messages from this backup to the Surface Duo.
    11. Click the Menu icon (three bars, top left) and select Restore.
    12. Click LOCAL FOLDER and browse to the Convert SMS and MMS from Windows Phone PRO folder on the Duo.
    13. Click to open the Android Converted Backup(s) folder.  There should be two folders there.
    14. Open the SMS folder to convert the SMS texts, and then the MMS folder to convert the MMS texts.
    15. Texts should be converted.

    Transfer Photos to Duo

    1. Plug the Windows phone into the PC, making sure the phone is unlocked.  Find all photo files and folders (check both SD and phone) and copy them to a temporary folder on the PC.  Put all files that are from the cameras on the phone into a folder called “- Windows Phone Archive” and put others into an appropriate file.
    2. Plug in the Surface Duo, making sure the phone is unlocked.  Transfer all folders to the Photos folder.
    3. For photos taken with the camera, move that folder to the DCIM folder in the root of the Surface Duo tree.  That way they’ll show up in the Google Photos just like the rest of the photos taken on the Duo.
    4. Move the any other folders (if moved from the PC) into the appropriate location on the Surface Duo.

    For Contacts:

    1. On the Duo add your Microsoft (outlook.com) account to the Contacts app on the Duo in the Contacts app settings.
    2. Set the outlook.com account as the default for new contacts and enable Automatially sync data so ensure your outlook.com (Microsoft account) contacts sync with the Contacts app.
    3. Your contacts should now appear in the Contacts app and be available to select for texts and phone calls.

    For email:

    1. Open the Outlook account and sign into your Microsoft account).
    2. Messages and contacts should be available.
    3. You can add multiple email accounts just like on the Windows phone.
    4. Contacts, calendar and emails are all available in the Outlook app on the Duo.

This pretty much covered everything I needed when moving from a Lumia 950XL Windows phone to the Duo.

    Thank you for the details!!!

Let me know if you have any further specific questions. I did this process on the Duo's and have learned a lot in the year we've had them. Can't wait to get or Duo 2s next week.

One last thing: it helps to enable the developer options in the Duo settings (scroll down to the bottom of the About screen and find the Build number. Tap the Build number field seven times to enable Developer Options). This will enable the developer options menu in the System settings. Open Developer options and scroll down to the Default USB configuration setting, tap it and select Filer Transfer. That way when you connect the Duo (or Duo 2) with a PC it will allow access to the file system.

Thank you for your detailed response above regarding transferring the different types of data over to Surface Duo (2). We did want to point out that enabling Developer Options isn't something we'd recommend all users to do, and options to control transfer of data via USB can be controlled without enabling Developer Options.

The USB connection mode can be changed one of two ways:

    • When connected via USB to a computer, you should see a silent notification option labeled 'Android System - Charging this device via USB Tap for more options.'

    • Tapping this notification will bring you to the Settings pane where you will see 'Use USB for: - and then select 'File Transfer'

Alternatively, these settings can be accessed directly via Settings, by navigating to: Settings > Connected Devices > USB Preferences.

    Thanks
