Surface Pro SSD is dead, and within warranty. Will I be charged for a replacement through warranty repair?

My Surface Pro 9 boots to UEFI with the error: "Couldn't find a bootable operating system." I was able to force a restart into Windows once, but not again since. I tried all the Microsoft recommended solutions, to no avail. I made a recovery usb and booted off it, and tried Startup Repair, which failed. I then checked diskpart to see if the SSD was recognized, and it doesn't show up at all. So, the SSD is dead.

I started a warranty repair order through Microsoft, but I want to know whether they will replace the SSD for free or if they'll charge me for it. If they will charge me, I can just buy an SSD and do the installation myself. I am traveling in a week and I need my laptop with me, so I don't think I have the time to send it off for repair, making this latter option much more attractive.

Thank you

    Hello, Alex Guha.

    Welcome to Microsoft Community!

Thank you for your description of the problem.

If we are able to determine that the SSD has lost response, then applying for warranty service is obviously the most efficient way to proceed.

In response to the Surface Pro 9 warranty issue, please allow me to share the following information with you:

How to get service or repair for Surface - Microsoft Support

Pay $49 for hardware repair while Microsoft Complete is in effect.

At the same time, I understand where you are coming from at this point, and replacing the SSD on your own is obviously a much more efficient way for you now. And I'm sure you're in a position to do so. However, let me kindly remind you that we do not normally recommend disassembling your device for debugging during the warranty period, as this may void your warranty. Community support always wants to fight for the user's more rights.

The Surface Technical Support team will provide a reasonable solution to your SSD issue during the warranty service process.

These are some of the thoughts I can share with you at this time. Of course, we respect and support any of your thoughts or decisions.

Thank you for your use and understanding of Surface products, and if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards.
