my surface pro 4 is not playing my dvd from the external dvd/rw usb device, which is installed and seems to be recognized. It turns on and spins and then stops spinning but the actual dvd never plays. It does pop up the microsoft apps store as if I need to download some other app in order to play this on my surface pro, but there are no suggestions, only dvd readers that pop up. I'm using Windows 10.

    Hello VVilla,

Thank you for reaching out Surface Community. I have few questions here I hope you don't mind.

    • Is this your first time connecting that dvd/rw usb device on your Surface? If not, is this working fine before?
    • Have you checked the system requirements of your external dvd/rw usb device?
    • What is the make/brand/model of your dvd/rw usb device?
    • Were you able to contact the dvd/rw usb device Manufacturer?
    • Do you see the driver in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus Controllers?
    • What is the Version and OS Build of your Surface Device?

In the meantime, please install the latest updates by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Updates > Check for Updates. Or run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. It is a self-healing tool which looks for potential issues and fixes them, as well as ensures your device is completely up to date.

Also to make sure you got the latest Drivers and Firmware please go to Download drivers and firmware for Surface and download the .msi file.

    • If there's not an .msi file that corresponds to the build of Windows 10 you have installed, select the .msi file that's closest to your build number.
    • To find out which version and build of Windows you're using, select Start > Settings  > System  > About , then look under Windows Specifications to find your operating system version and OS build number.

    Please keep us posted.

    Regards,

    KarenJune_F

Also, I found some info on windows 10 which ask me to go into device manager and find the IDE and remove a DVD file. HOWEVER, I did NOTdo it because I wanted to see if surface had any known solutions to this issue.

    Thanks

    Candice

Surface does not supply enough power over the USB port for many peripherals and
I suspect this is the case with this DVD writer. We've see this all the time
here in this forum. The only solution is to use a POWERED USB hub between your
    device and your Surface.

Do you mean that I plug the DVD player into an alternate power source and also into an outlet. Using a 2-sided style USB cord. (See picture) I believe this is the USB cord that came with the DVD player, and it sounds like I simply should plug one side into a USB adapter that's connected to the wall and the other side onto my surface pro 4? Is that what you're saying or should I expect this to work with the DVD player not "DIRECTLY" connected to the surface pro, but only connected to the usb port, which is connected to the surface?
