Can't update Surface Pro to Windows 8.1

I have an older Surface Pro running Windows 8.  I'd like to eventually update to Windows 10, but am starting with Windows 8.1.

I've reset the system and installed all updates.  When I go the store and follow the Windows 8.1 Pro update, it says "Couldn't install Windows 8.1. You need to install one or more updates to your firmware or device drivers.  Open Windows Update, install all available updates, and then try installing Windows 8.1 again.".

Again, I've already reset the system back to factory settings and all the updates have been installed.  There's not a single update left to install except the new OS.  It's very frustrating.

Is there any fix to this??

    Hello,

Just install Windows 10 and see if it will activate. I have been using Windows 10 on my Surface Pro (1^st^ Gen). I just installed windows then when I went online it activated.

You can go here for Windows 10: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

After you install Windows 10, windows update will install the drivers you need.

Or if you want to stay with Windows 8.1, you can go here to Download a recovery image for your Surface: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage
