Hi, my daughter has a surface pro 1796 and after updating got an error 0x00000c or f or something like that.  of course we didn't have a recover USB created before.  Do I need to create a recover USB from a similar surface Pro?  trying to recover from a USB (following the instructions on the Microsoft site) made from a different computer doesn't allow me to reset this one.  thanks!

    > trying to recover from a USB (following the instructions on the Microsoft site) made from a different computer doesn't allow me to reset this one

Be sure to use a 16GB USB stick formatted FAT32 on a Windows Computer.

    Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage   (with a

different Windows computer if yours is not working properly)  and download a

recovery image for your Surface. You will need a 16GB USB stick formatted FAT32.

Unzip/extract the recovery zip to the formatted USB stick and then-

    1. Make sure your Surface is turned off and plugged in, and then insert the USB

recovery drive into the USB port.

    1. Press and hold the volume-down button while you press and release the power

    button.

    1. When the Microsoft or Surface logo appears, release the volume-down button.
    2. When prompted, select the language and keyboard layout you want.
    3. Select Troubleshoot , and then select Recover from a drive . If prompted for

a recovery key, select Skip this drive at the bottom of the screen.

    Note:

Be sure to select the Troubleshoot option on this screen. Don’t select the Use a

device option. If you select the Use a device option, your Surface will reboot

from the USB recovery drive again and the reset process will start over.

    1. Choose either Just remove my files or Fully clean the drive.

The option to clean the drive is more secure but takes much longer. For example,

if you’re recycling your Surface, you should clean the drive. If you’re keeping

your Surface, you just need to remove your files.

    1. Select Recover.

Surface restarts and displays the Surface logo while the reset process

continues. This can take several minutes.

Hi, thanks for your reply.  I've followed those suggested instructions using both image versions (1703 and 1709) listed for my surface and I just get "there was a problem recovering your PC".  any suggestions on how to proceed?  thanks!

Was there a numerical error message? At what point did it fail?

upon loading windows WHEN? did it actually boot from USB and were you able to

start the process or did it immediately go to this error?

if there is a microSD card in the slot, remove it.

get a new 16GB USB stick and format it FAT32 on a different Windows Computer

extract the 1709 recovery image to it and try again to boot from USB and wipe

and reimage. if this fails, if you are in the US, you can go to the closest

physical retail Microsoft Store and they will assist.
