External Monitor charges my Surface Laptop Studio 2 via USB C.

Hello everyone!

At home, I connect an external monitor to my Surface Laptop Studio (Core i7, 64 GB RAM, GeForce RTX 4060), but for better resolution I prefer to connect it over USB Type C. This monitor (Samsung C34H890WJ*) charges my Surface Laptop Studio 2 constantly, and Smart Charging feature is not always engaged (since it operates automatically, I can't controll it), but message "Weak charging device" appears.

Is there any possibility to deactivate charging over USB Type C?

I'm trying to maintain battery level between 30% and 80%, and manually plug and unplug Surface Original Charger (127W Microsoft Model 1932), so, I don't want other devices to automatically charge my surface, as I'm controlling charging and discharging process manually, in order to prolong its battery life.

Limiting Battery Capacity to 50% via UEFI Boot Configuration isn't comfortable solution for me, as sometimes I use my Surface outdoors, in coffee shops, or during presentations without power supply.

Thank you in advance for any response.

    Hello Daniyar1990,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I did some research on the Samsung C34H890WJ monitor you're using, and I noticed that this monitor supports multiple hardware interfaces: usb, hdmi, usb-c, displayport.

And Surface Laptop Studio 2 With three USB ports:

But let me kindly explain to you that this is usually the case when your Surface Laptop Studio 2 device is connected to an external monitor via a USB-C port without a power adapter attached, and that monitor is connected to an external power supply. So for the Surface Laptop Studio 2, the USB-C port attempts to power the Surface. However, since the display itself is consuming power, no additional power will be supplied to the Surface, thus indicating "Weak charging device".

Unfortunately, there is no way to turn off the charging function of the USB-C port separately. And in fact, if your Surface Laptop Studio 2 keeps connecting to an external monitor without connecting to a power adapter, this problem will persist.

Therefore, the advice I can offer is:

    1. Carry a power adapter with you whenever possible and charge your Surafce Laptop Studio 2 when trying to use an external display. If necessary, a power strip may be used.
    2. Reduce the requirements of external displays and try to use displays that do not require external power, such as some small auxiliary screens.

In this case, I decided to limit battery through Surface UEFI interface, so it won't be charged higher than 50%, because my main goal was to terminate charging when battery level reaches 80%, and let battery drain to 30%, and then connect Surface original Charger back, and after it reaches 80%, disconnect charger again. Since there is no preventing External monitor from charging my surface, limiting battery to 50% is most plausible solution. I've tried to connect through HDMI, and noticed slight difference in picture quality, it seems that HDMI cable can not fully utilize physical resolution of External monitor, and USB Type-C can.

Anyways, thank you for advices and expanded answer.

    Hi Daniyar1990,

    I read your response here.

I can feel that you cherish your Surface Laptop Studio 2 very much and would like to find solutions to extend the battery life as much as possible.

It is clear that everything you have done for battery care is correct and meaningful. Because you have "Battery Limited mode" turned on, this is a feature for users who need to connect the device for a long time:

You can also take some time to read the information in the above link, in my opinion, in fact, not turn on the battery limit mode, and adopt "smart charging" may bealso a good choice, because all of these solutions are actually aimed at maintaining the battery and extending its life.
