Issues with my surface pro 7

Hi everyone.

Specs:

  • CPU i5 -1035G4
  • Ram: 8gb
  • W10 Version 1909

I have had my Surface Pro 7 for about 6 months and I am having an issue with CPU throttling. Many times when I have the A/C plugged in my performance is worse when I am using apps such as Zoom or Tencent meeting and I share my screen. I sometimes have issues when watching Netflix.

My CPU goes from 3ghz+ to 0.5-1.5ghz which makes it unusable for me to use as it is very choppy. This is after 5 minutes of use and the CPU utilization is under 30%

Sometimes I have to take out the A/C for it to improve.  If I then plug in the A/C it goes fine for around 10 seconds then the CPU throttles again.

What I've tried:

  • I changed the power option to Ultimate performance but that made things worse. So I changed it back.
  • I've looked in the advance tab in all of my power settings to make sure it uses 100% when plugged in.
  • I've used a fan at the back on my surface to try and cool it down ( It's not that hot even without the fan)
  • Updated my drivers / firmware / etc
  • I tried different sockets to see if it was a power issue.

I think that maybe something is wrong with my battery maybe, I have no idea what is happening. I am tempted to send it back and get a new one.

If anyone has some suggestions. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

    Hi Aaron_S_K,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

Please run these steps on your Surface Pro 7 to troubleshoot then observe if the issues still persist:

1: Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update

2: Update drivers and firmware manually

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 7 then click Download on the next page.

Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

3: Run System File Checker Tool in Windows 10

Same problem. No solution. It's a shame. I bought a brand new computer for 500$ and is working better!

I am considering buying a weaker charger for a prior Surface Pro. Just a suggestion

A similarly discussion, a solution was throttlestop but not sure if that helps in your case.

When i open the task manager, the GPU runs up to 100%. It's fully loaded.

And in the list of processes, the Desktop Window Manager seems to be the problem.

I wil investigate more when i will have time.
