Battery drain after OS updates

Problem: Battery drain in SD.

Frequency: Random months through the year.

Trigger: Monthly OS / Security / Play service updates (or simply software updates).

Root Cause: Device does not go into the 'Deep Sleep' mode, it's kept awake by the system all the time.

Observations: When the device was new, for several months, the battery life was great. Phone needed to be charged in 1-2 days, with only 5-7% drain overnight. After one of the OS updates, the battery performance fell relatively drastically. It flipped back after one of the updates in a couple of months, stayed for some time, and now the drain is back after the August update. In the battery drain period, the phone needs to be charged twice a day, with overnight drain of ~20%.

Good days battery performance- Bad days battery performance-

Upon monitoring with Accubattery app, it now shows the 0 'Deep Sleep' time, while in good battery days, it usually has several hours.

According to Accubattery glossary,

An Android device will often activate an ultra-low-power mode while the screen is turned off to minimize power usage. This mode is calleddeep sleep*. Note that this is not the same asstandby. An Android device is often said to be instandbywhile the screen is off. However, it is not necessarily indeep sleepwhile the screen is off. Also, please do not confuse this with thedozefeature introduced in Android M 6.0, which can be configured by the user. Thedeep sleepmode is regulated by Android itself and is not user-configurable as such.*

According to Android documentation,

To avoid draining the battery, an Android device that is left idle quickly falls asleep. However, there are times when an application needs to wake up the screen or the CPU and keep it awake to complete some work

One of the common responses could be some app is over-using the CPU or keeping the system awake. But that's not the case as seen from the app usage. Also screen usage is not a lot, because good days battery usage also shows screen on the top, but the battery lasts much longer.

Bad days- Good days-

Speaking of battery usage, this line graph has never worked correctly on the Duo. It always shows only a few hours history, while the apps below are used for days. On other Android devices, it shows days of history since the day phone was charged above 90%.

Conclusion / Request to MS: All the Duo owners love these Duos, please show some love from your end too by keeping them up to date with maintenance software updates. Please resolve this battery drain system issue, or at least when you stop updating OTA, we hope the last update won't leave this issue in.

Other related requests: Poor MS launcher customization level for Duo v/s general Android, quicker OS updates (Android 13 is out there for a year now), Tap to pay broke in the last update, etc. Other Duo users are welcome to add more.

Update: The device is now going back to 'Deep Sleep' when inactive after the 'Google Play system update: August 1, 2023', which landed OTA last night. The good battery days are back again!
