Surface Pro losing connection to Type Cover

Hi all,

Lately, my Surface Pro (128GB) has been losing its connection to my Type Cover every few minutes lately. The cover works again if I detach it and immediately reattach it, but the issue keeps popping up and is very annoying. I'm fairly sure there are no errors with the cover itself, as I've checked nearly every key (nothing seems held down permanently, nothing fails to record a button press). I'm also confident the contacts on both ends are clean, and the "sticky keys" filter is set to off.

Note:

My surface has been throwing me an error when it as been trying to update the "Surface Pro Aggregator Firmware", which has been described as a problem on the forums. When it attempts to install, the Surface hangs at the boot screen with the "Please wait while we install a system update" message until I press the power button (no progress bar, etc). I uninstalled that update and seem to be running the older firmware now (v2.84.150.0, from 1/13/2014).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Clare,

Thanks for responding with your suggestions for solutions. For the record: I'm using 8.1, I can't pinpoint exactly when these problems started, it did happen randomly, and the entire Type Cover would cease functioning.

I'm happy to report that, for a whole evening now, the keyboard has not lost a connection. I think it might be fixed.

Even though I had already done it before, it turns out that Solution 5 (the two-button shutdown) was part of the solution. I had to run it twice and all hardware besides the type cover was disconnected and I was running on battery power when I tried to run the update on the firmware (including my microSD card). For some reason, on my second attempt during that odd setup, it installed the firmware update and I'm now at v2.84.350.0 (for 5/9/2014).

It seems it was the firmware after all, so I hope others are able to fix this. I don't know why the firmware update had so many problems being applied, but I hope future ones are a bit less problematic.

    Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the community and thank you for bringing this to our attention. I understand you are having connectivity issues with your cover, correct? I will do my best to help you here.

I'd like to know more details:

    • The update problem happened before the cover issue or after?
    • Are you using Windows 8.0 or 8.1?
    • Does the cover problem happen randomly or while doing certain tasks?
    • When it disconnects itself, it will lose all functionality not just keyboard or touch pad, correct?

    I'd suggest the following:

Please reply back and let us know what's happening.

    Best Regards,

    Clare
