On screen keyboard doesn't pop up automatically when I try to write something in search bar of Microsoft edge and chrome and other apps like white board to write my file name. I checked " service.msc" but couldn't find " Touch and handwriting service" in it. I am using surface pro 7 and I feel weird that I cannot use on screen typing in tablet mode too for searching in browser.

    Hi Kamalmag69,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are experiencing an issue with the on-screen keyboard not popping up automatically in Chrome and Microsoft Edge on your Surface Pro 7. I am here to help and let us work on this together.

To resolve this issue, please try the following steps:

    1. Check if on-screen keyboard is enabled: Go to Start > Settings > Ease of Access. Select Keyboard from the left side menu and enable it by switching on “Turn on the On-Screen Keyboard” option.
    2. Change your settings:
      1. Open the Settings app on your Surface Pro 7.
      2. Click on "Devices".
      3. Click on "Typing" in the left-hand menu.
      4. Scroll down to the "Touch keyboard" section and make sure that the "Automatically show the touch keyboard in windowed apps when there's no keyboard attached to your device" option is turned on.
      5. If the option is already turned on, try turning it off and then turning it back on again.
    3. Add the on-screen keyboard to Taskbar to see if it's working: This can be achieved by right-clicking on the taskbar and enabling “Show touch keyboard button”. Then try to click to see if the onscreen keyboard will show.
    4. Make sure that your device is up to date: On Windows 10: Go to Settings >> Update and Security >> Windows updates >> Check for updates. For Windows 11: Go to Settings >> Windows updates >> Check for updates. Also check for optional updates available and install them.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, kindly give answers to the following questions so we can further isolate your issue  and formulate appropriate troubleshooting steps.

    • May I know what build version of Windows does your device currently running?
    • When did you started to notice this problem?

I hope the provided solution works for you. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia
