Why does my brand new Surface Pen refuse to ink on Surface Pro 6.

Hi,

I am using a Surface Pro 6 with Windows 11 Pro installed. I bought a new surface pen, which I connected easily via Bluetooth. The pen is recognized and the shortcut button works as it should. However the moment I touch the screen with the pen tip, nothing happens. I seems the touchscreen does not recognize the pen. When I draw with 1 finger on the screen, it works. Touching the screen with more than 1 finger, e.g. to zoom in or out, doesn't work. What could be the issue and how could I solve this?

I tried the following solution I found via Copilot :

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Click View on top and check Show hidden devices
  3. Expand Human Interface Devices

> HID-compliant pen > Uninstall device

> Surface pen settings > Uninstall device

> Surface pen integration > Uninstall device

> HID-Compliant touch screen > Uninstall device (if you see 2 of these drivers, uninstall both)

> Intel (R) Precise Touch Device > Uninstall device

  1. Expand Firmware > Surface touch > Uninstall device
  2. Expand System devices > Surface pen pairing > Uninstall device

> Surface Touch Servicing ML > Uninstall device

Note: If prompted with a checkbox stating "Delete the driver software for this device", leave it unchecked then hit Uninstall. Do this for all drivers asked to uninstall

  1. Restart
  2. After Restart, check in Settings > Devices, if the Surface Pen is still paired on the device. If it is still paired, remove and add the Surface Pen again.
  3. Test the Surface Pen

    Hello Bart DC,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

After reading what you've posted here, I think the issue may not be from a Surface Pen glitch, but rather from the screen of your Surface Pro 6, as the touch screen does not seem to recognize the Surface Pen and does not recognize multi-finger operations.

The solution you have tried is similar to solution 2 in the support link below:

What to try if your Surface touchscreen doesn't work - Microsoft Support

So here are some other things I can recommend you to do:

    1. Manually download and install the driver and firmware package for Surface Pro 6:

Download Surface Pro 6 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center ****

After the installation is complete, restart your Surface and verify that the problem persists.

    1. With the help of the Surface Diagnostic ToolKit (SDT), do a relatively complete test on your Surface:

Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support ****

You can download it from the Microsoft Store.

Running the SDT will take some time, but you may see some diagnostic recommendations to refer to after the diagnosis is complete. When you run SDT, you will see a test to check if the screen recognizes multiple contacts, which you can use to test if the screen works.

But if the problem persists, then perhaps I would refer you to Solutions 1 and Solution 4 in the support links.

Please back up important data before resetting the Surface.

I will wait here for your results.

    Best Regards,
