H Mitchel,
Your Surface may fail to start Windows due to a corrupted Windows component or a faulty hardware.
If you're unable to reset you device using the recovery options on your Surface, we suggest that you reset your device using a recovery drive created on Windows 10. Click on this link for information on how you can create a recovery drive on a working PC.
Reset your device to its factory settings using the recovery image if using the recovery drive did not work. Using the recovery image will erase everything on your Surface. On how you can download the recovery image, click on this link.
Run check disk if recovery fails. This will check and fix errors on your hard drive. To run check disk, follow these steps:
- Connect the recovery drive and turn on your device.
- On the Choose an option screen, select Advanced Options.
- Choose Command Prompt.
- Type chkdsk /r and press Enter.
- Wait for the process to finish and restart your device.
If none of the solutions provided worked, you might need to send your device for repair. Click on this link on how you can get service for your Surface. You can also take your device to a Microsoft Store and have it assessed.
