Win10 VPN client password problem

I recently upgraded from a Surface Pro 3 running win10 to a Surface Pro 7 running win10. I use the win10 vpn client to connect via pptp to a LInksys LRT224 router. The Surface Pro 3 (and all my other computers) connects with no problem. However, the Surface Pro 7 starts to connect, and then asks for my password, even though the password is saved. When I enter my password, I get an error saying the remote computer terminated the connection. This happens only on the Surface Pro 7. The vpn client is configured identically.

Things I've tried (in no particular order):

  1. Deleting and re-installing all the vpn miniports through Device Manager.
  2. Turning off the firewall and Defender realtime protection.
  3. Deleting and re-installing the vpn connection multiple times, including in PowerShell using the ras command.
  4. Every conceivable combination of chaps, ms-chaps and no encryption.
  5. Connecting via the VPN settings as well as the toolbar.
  6. Third-party vpn clients.
  7. All the DISM checks and sfc /scannow
  8. Disabling ipv6 for both the vpn connection and internet connection
  9. Changing the vpn client from Automatic to PPTP
  10. Disabling all non-Microsoft services
  11. Installing all latest updates.
  12. Trying multiple internet connections at different locations

I'm at my wits end and almost ready to reinstall Windows and start everything from scratch.

I'm an advanced user..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi PaulTauger1,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. I'm sorry to hear about the VPN issue you are having on your Surface Pro 7.

As much as we would love to assist you on this concern but your Windows 10 issue is more appropriate to be posted in IT Pro TechNet forums since it’s something in regards with VPN. Please post your question in the Technet forums (microsoft.com).

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
