Hi,

I cannot type a hash or the 'at' symbol on the surface pro keyboard when I type 'shift 2 or 3', can anyone please help or do I have a faulty keyboard? It's brand new.

    Hello JessicaCarnevale,

Thanks for posting your concern here.

First of all, do some of the keys work? If yes, we suggest to follow these methods and see if issue persists or not:

    • Disconnect and reconnect the type cover. This causes Windows to re-identify the device in Device Manager, which can fix certain issues.
    • Force a shut down and restart your Surface. It resets the hardware and clears all the cache and memory for your hardware.
    • Check Settings. Go to Settings>Ease of Access>Keyboard. Check for settings like Filter Keys that may be altering from what you expect.
    • Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check for Windows Update.

It would also be better if you could test your type cover to another Surface device. But if issue persists to another device, and it only happens to limited number of keys, then it is more likely that this is a hardware issue rather than a software issue since some of the keyboard works.

For any hardware issue, kindly contact our support via Contact Us Microsoft Support to seek exchange options for your type cover. If you're located outside the United States, see Global Support Phone Numbers.

Otherwise, don't hesitate to respond to this thread if there’s anything else that needs to be addressed.

    Kind regards,

    StevenK

If you can type 2 or 3, and all other key combinations work, then the keys are working as they should because the keys themselves don't know if the shift key is also being pressed. The issue would then be software so follow Steven's guidance. .
