3rd Party Charger

In the past I bought a few charging cables with USB-C converter and detected. But, charging was slow. I figured it may be the output from the power adapter. Months later, I bought a 3rd party docking station and USB/Power Hub. I tried both of them and some reason it seems it won't detect. I tried going through the old cables I bought a while back through the same power adapter and now it doesn't seem to detect.

Has Microsoft implemented a way where it detects incompatibility chargers and disable charging?

    Hi, TiaPen!

Thanks for reaching out Microsoft Community. We are sorry to learn you have issues with your Surface Pro 6 not being charged using 3^rd^ party accessories. Thanks for taking the time to let us know about this and allowing us to help you out.

As far as I know, charging compatibility is not a result for any updates installed on Surface devices. If you're able to connect a USB-C accessory to your device and it is detected by your Surface Pro 6, the port is working fine.

As stated in the How to charge Surface article, there is a section there that discusses how to charge devices using USB-C. Using this is an alternative method to charge your device just in case the Surface charger is unavailable.

    ·         Surface devices will only charge with USB 2.0 or 3.0 compliant chargers. Chargers that provide 5 volts, 1.5 amps, or 7.5 watts can slowly charge your device and should be used only if there aren't other options. Low voltage USB-A chargers with a USB-A to USB-C cable won’t work at all.

    ·         For best performance, we recommend using a USB-C charger that provides at least the same wattage as the power supply that was included with your Surface. For more info about Surface power supplies, see Surface power supplies and charging requirements.

    ·         If you experience charging issues when using a USB-C port, see Fix USB-C problems.

There is a note there that mentions the following:

Some third-party accessories may be incompatible with your device or are potentially counterfeit, so we strongly recommend that you purchase and use original Microsoft or Microsoft-licensed devices or accessories only. Use of incompatible or counterfeit accessories, batteries, and charging devices could result in damage to your device and pose a possible risk of fire, explosion, or battery failure leading to serious injuries, or other serious hazards. Damage caused by use with products, not manufactured, licensed, or supplied by Microsoft is not covered under the hardware warranty.

With that being said, we suggest to get a replacement for the charger intended for your Surface Pro 6. Kindly Contact Microsoft Support for replacement options. If you are outside the US, please check this page to know the number for your country in our list of Global Customer Service phone numbers.

We hope this helps you out.

    Kind regards,
