I had same issue. Removed update KB4074588. When I tried to uninstall it acts like it locks up. I clicked start > restart. Surface says updating...after reboot everything works again. Check for updates reinstalls update KB4074588 but everything is working this time.

A recent Windows update, March 5, 2018—KB4090913 (OS Build 16299.251), addressed this. More info:

    • Addresses issue where some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard, or mouse, stop working. This may occur when the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.

    Hi Omar,

There's a possibility that your type cover stopped working due to a bug in a recent update. To assist you better, please provide the following information:

    • Which version of Windows are you currently using?
    • Did you make any recent changes on your Surface?
    • We recommend that you perform a two-button shutdown and run the Surface Diagnostic Tool if the issue persists.

To perform a two-button shutdown, press and hold the Volume-up button and the Power button on your Surface at the same time for 15 seconds and then release both of them. The screen may flash the Surface logo, but remember to continue holding down the buttons for 15 seconds.

You can follow the steps on how to run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit on this link. The diagnosis may take 15 minutes or less, but can take an hour or longer depending on your internet connection and the repairs that the tool needs to do to fix the problems.

Give us an update, and let us know if you have any other concerns.

    Regards.

Hi. I have the same problem. My Surface Type Cover stopped working suddenly some time ago. I have tried all the methods suggested on the Microsoft webpages to no avail. I also deleted the Surface Type Cover Filter Device driver as suggested in one of the pages, and it also didn't help; the driver also did not reinstall itself as said in the webpage.

I have also tried what you suggested above - doing the two button shutdown and running the diagnostics. It also didn't help
