Surface Laptop 3 Wi-Fi Driver Issues

I'm troubleshooting an ongoing Wi-Fi issue with the Surface Laptop 3. I'm wondering when Microsoft will provide a fix for this issue?

The Surface Laptop 3 i'm using has the Intel AX201 802.11ax Wi-Fi adaptor.

Operating System is Windows 10 Enterprise Build 19044 (latest) all updates installed.

When using the latest Intel driver version 22.160.0.4 for the AX201 everything works as expected, however this version must be installed using the OEM drivers which are not recommended by Microsoft.

Up until the August 2022 patch, Microsoft was pushing driver version 22.80.0.9 Surface Laptop 3 update history (microsoft.com)

This version faced connectivity issues. And noticably in my case performance issues on networks where PMF (802.11w) is enabled.

Microsoft is now pushing driver version 22.40.0.7 and this version is also causing me alot of grief. Whereby you cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network where both PMF
(802.11w) and fast-bss-transitioning (802.11r) are enabled at the same time. If either one of these 802.11w/802.11r is enabled non-concurrently on the SSID, the Surface Laptop 3 can connect, but if both features are enabled on the SSID, it will not connect. The only fix is to upgrade to the OEM driver.

When will Microsoft recommend and supply a working driver for the Intel AX201 adaptor?

    Hi John Battam,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. Apologies for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Yes, we do not recommend updating or installing drivers directly from the OEM since this updated drivers may have not been tested yet for the Surface but in this case where the most updated version is the only version that works on the device, I suggest that you keep using the said version from the OEM (22.160.0.4). It could be that this version is still being tested on the Surface and will eventually be released officially also for the Surface through Windows Updates. We don't have specific details yet as to when will be the next update of the Intel AX201 adapter be released.

For the issues that you encountered on the older versions though (22.80.9 and 22.40.7), I suggest that you submit this feedback to let our Microsoft and developers know about this specific issues you encountered on these versions. You can submit this through our Feedback Hub app. Please see: Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app for reference.

    Kind regards,

    Marrion
