How does IR Camera on my Surface pro 7 works

Hello everyone,

on the upper left side corner of my display, between my front facing camera and my microphone, there are another two small cameras/holes. One of this camera glows red every time I use Windows Hello. From my tests it came out, that both cameras are being used for facial recognition. (Covering one camera at a time). I guess the one with the red light must be the IR. So my question will be, what exactly does the secondary camera do, right next to this red light/camera. Thank you a lot for your help and time. Have a nice day.

    Hello RobertoMechea18,

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community and posting your concern here.

Your Surface has cameras that you can use to take pictures, unlock your computer and more, These are the Windows Hello camera and front-facing camera located above the screen. The light that you're seeing is the privacy light that appears near the active camera when you're using it. The privacy light can't be turned off. Technically, the built-in IR camera is used for privacy and facial recognition for Windows Hello while the front-facing camera is mainly used for taking photos and videos.

    Hello StevenK,

unfortunately you didn't answer my question fully. I know which one is the front facing camera and which one is the privacy light. That being said there are still 2 cameras left. One of them is supposed to be the IR one, because it flashes a red light. So my question will be what exactly does the camera next to the IR do. Is that also an IR camera? In the attached picture you can see from which camera am I talking about. The one with the question mark. That was from me today, hope to hear from you soon and have a nice day.

    Kind regards

    Robert Mechea
