New Surface Book 3 - should I charge it up fully and let it run down a few times or not worry about it?

Hello,

I have just received a new Surface Book 3 and somewhere in the past I had read for new laptops you should fully charge them and then let them run down a few times, this is the best way to initially ensure battery health. Or do I not worry and just leave the power in all of the time?

Thank you for your help.

Regards

Thank you for posting your inquiry here in Microsoft Community, WayneJohncock.

Please check the article, Caring for your Surface battery. Surface devices have lithium-ion batteries, and the article will tell how to maximize the life and longevity of the battery. Here are the recommended methods to take care of your Surface Battery:

    • It is common for the capacity of lithium-ion cells to diminish after a certain number of charge/discharge cycles. This will result in shorter intervals between charging and lower battery capacity.
    • When using your device, make sure the battery drains below 50 percent regularly. This will help minimize deterioration of the battery cells.
    • Surface devices have features to reduce battery deterioration. Keeping your device current with the latest driver and firmware updates is the best way to help preserve battery reliability and longevity.
    • Avoid using or charging at extreme high temperatures.
    • Keeping or storing at a high state of charge.

Hope this helps, otherwise, let us know so we can further assist.

If your Surface Book 3 is going to stay plugged in more than 95% of the time, I suggest turning on battery limit. This feature will stop the charging of the device to 100%, as it is not a good idea to stay at plugged in and charged 100% battery for weeks and months on end. I had 3 iPads have their batteries bulge like a balloon because they were being used as an always plugged in kiosk and I wish iPadOS had the battery limit feature.
