I bought a Surface in 2013 and haven't used it in ages.  How do I figure out which model it is? Can they be refurbished? is it worth it?

(ps: I randomly selected a model number below to complete this form)

You can see if you can download the Surface app from the Store. Link is here. There's an info tab that will say your model.

If the Surface app isn't working, you can get the model another way/

Right-click or long press on the Start button on the task bar and open a Command Prompt window. Type the following:

    wmic computersystem get model

And press Enter. You will get the exact model name.

Surface 2 and Surface RT have no future path to upgrade from and are unfortunately dead. Sure, they can still be used, but there are no new features or apps for these Surfaces.

If it's a Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2, then it can still be updated to the latest build of Windows 10 without issue. You can download the media creation tool from here, run it on your Surface Pro, and you'll jump straight to the latest Windows!

    Hi DaVigilant1,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

If your Surface was bought in 2013, that could be one of the original Surface devices. It could be either a Surface RT, Surface 2, Surface Pro 1 or Surface Pro 2. I'm sorry but these devices had been discontinued already. You may know its exact model by getting the Serial Number of the Surface then enter it to this page: https://mybusinessservice.surface.com/en-US/CheckWarranty/CheckWarranty

You may check this page on How to get the serial number of your Surface.

    Dear Entegy-

I hope you and everyone you care for are doing well.

THANK you! The Surface App was not working (or I couldn't get it to work) however, the Command Prompt was perfect: This is a Surface RT.

Given your believable guidance, I can easily accept that this items is currently of little to no value to me.  Subsequently, I found a useful  article in Geek Wire on this device which I will now share with you (enjoy):

Maybe there is a "land of milk and honey" where these devices go in the afterlife..

Anyway - thank you again for the quick and informative response. You are appreciated!

    Hello and thank you!

Well, if anyone else ever has this question, it seems that entering the SN using the link you provided is SUPER simple and provides a great piece of information on the device!

Turns out this is the Surface RT (or now nicknamed the Surface OG :-)

    Your time is appreciated!

    Best regards and stay safe!
