How do I re-engage smart charging?

I paused my smart charging on my Surface Pro 8 two or three weeks ago, and it still hasn't re-engaged.

The surface Pro 8 app says that smart charging will re-engage after a few days. Is something wrong? When should I expect it to automatically re-engage? Is there a way to manually get it to re-engage?

    Hi Greg!

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We're here to help and let's work on this together.

Regarding your query, Smart Charging is an automatic feature, and it will automatically come back on when it detects your device is plugged in for prolonged periods or used at elevated temperatures. For more details on Smart Charging, please see through this link Smart charging on Surface - Microsoft Support.

Thanks again for choosing Microsoft. Hope this helps!

    Regards,

Thanks for your reply--I didn't know how to get back to this forum, so that's why I hadn't replied to your response. This is an ongoing issue. Since I turned off Smart Charging that one time, it has never automatically turned back on. The computer charges to 100%, every time it charges. It isn't supposed to do with Smart Charging on, right?. Also, I've noticed that the computer does sometimes get hot--is this because Smart Charging isn't working?

    Hi Greg!

Thanks for getting back to us!

As mentioned above, Smart Charging is a feature that automatically turns on when it detects your device is plugged in for prolonged periods or used at elevated temperatures. With your query on your Surface getting hot, please follow troubleshooting steps below:

Before considering any troubleshooting options, please first make sure your device is up to date. To check for updates, just follow these steps:

Start> Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update> then check for updates and install any available updates.

Run Surface Diagnostics Toolkit and complete task here Fix common Surface problems using the Surface app and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit - Microsoft Support.

Please also try to update your drivers and firmware, see through this link Download drivers and firmware for Surface - Microsoft Support on how to.

Please let us know how it goes. We look forward to hearing from you.

    Greetings,

    RodelioP.

I did all this, and it still shows that my Smart Charging is paused. My wife did some research and found that in order for Smart Charging to be restored, the computer has to be plugged in constantly, for days on end, and used more like a desktop than a laptop. In other words, it doesn't just automatically restart in a few days, as the Microsoft app says. So, now that I have paused Smart Charge, it looks like it will never turn back on, since I'm not going to keep it plugged in all the time. I'll use my Surface the way it was meant to be used--as a portable device. This means Smart Charging will never turn back on for me.

:( Sad to have a feature that only works when the device is used the way it isn't designed.

    Hi Greg!

Thanks for getting back to us!

We truly appreciate your cooperation on this. Unfortunately, we couldn't do anything with this feature as this automatically turns on as well. You can post a feedback here Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app - Microsoft Support so that our Microsoft Engineers can check on it.
