How can I keep the Intel Precise Touch Device from malfunctioning?

Frequently, when I leave my Surface Pro 4 unattended for a while, and it goes into standby, when I wake it up again the touch screen has stopped working completely. I've found a workaround that gets the touch screen working again without a reboot:

  1. Delete the Intel Precise Touch Device in Device Manager.
  2. Allow Windows to reinstall the device.

So far, this has always brought the touch screen back to life.

However, this is annoying and frustrating, and who knows how long this workaround will work? Is there away to keep this from happening at all? Event Viewer seems to show that the issue is preceded by three System error events in close succession from SurfaceTconDriver, but those are less than informative:

Surface Tcon Driver TP Write fails, Status = 0xc0000186

    Hi FlorisKleijne,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community.

Please run these steps first on your Surface Pro 4 to make sure that the device is up to date then test if the issue persist:

1: Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and check Windows Update

    2: Update drivers and firmware

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About.

Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 4 then click Download on the next page.

Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

3: Run System File Checker Tool in Windows 10

If in case the issue persist, please check what is the current Driver version of the following drivers installed on the device. Double-click the driver then go to its Driver tab to see the Driver version:

    Under Human Interface devices

        **Intel Precise Touch**

        **HID-compliant touchscreen**

    Under Firmware

       **Surface Touch**

    Hello @Marrion_Y,

Thanks for your advice. Here's how I fared with your steps:

    1. Surface Diagnostics: No issues found.
    2. Download Surface driver package: No MSI available for my build number (19042.1202), skipping. (I keep everything up-to-date through Windows Update anyway.)
    3. DISM result: No issues found. SFC result: Only corrupt metadata found and fixed.

Driver version for Intel Precise Touch Device: 1.2.0.100.

    Floris
