    Hi Patty,

One of the features of your Surface is the camera app, and yes, you can change the camera options and switch between the front and back cameras. To do that, follow these steps:

    • In Windows 10, select the Change camera button at the top of the screen.
    • In Windows 8.1, swipe in from the bottom edge to see the app commands. (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app), and then select the Change camera button.

Aside from switching between the front and back cameras, you can zoom in or out, change the photo aspect ratio, show or hide framing grid lines, adjust video settings, and change what happens when you press and hold the camera button. To learn how to, see at Camera app and webcams help.

For future reference, you may learn more about taking photos and videos with your Surface through this Microsoft article: Take photos and videos with Surface.

Enjoy your Surface device. We'll be here if you need additional assistance.

Thank you.  I know how to switch between front and rear cameras but what I want to do is change the default setting so that it always  opens already set to rear camera ready to take photos. At the moment it opens with front camera and I have to switch before taking a photo.

To add clarity to your concern, can you please specify the exact product name or device name that you have? Is it Surface Pro 3 or Surface 3? Also, what's the current Windows version do you use?

Also, are you using a different camera app? For an instance, when you use Skype, is it by default opening the front camera once you launch the app? Because if your camera app supports it, then you can go to Camera > under Application Settings, and select your default camera app.

Furthermore, one solution would be disabling the front camera if you don't want to utilize it, or you can also uninstall and reinstall the camera app so it will go back to its default settings.

Feel free to post back if you need more help.

    Surface 3 and Windows 10

I am not using a different camera app . The default setting seems to have changed by its own accord - it was originally the rear camera then the next day became the front camera without any action on my part.

I use Skype where the default is front camera and it is fine.

Thanks for the information. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the camera app so it would go back to its default settings?

We look forward to your response.
