Constant BIOS Boot on Surface Pro 2

I had just received my SP2 from the Microsoft Store two days ago and decided that I would go out and buy a Bluetooth Mouse. The mouse connected once and failed, then I realised that the Bluetooth of my Surface has stopped functioning completely and I wasn't even able to detect my phone. Therefore I decided to "Refresh" my PC and reset most of the settings back to normal.

However, during this refreshing period, Surface entered the screen below and halted all progress. I played around with it, one way of going around the problem was to "Delete all Secure Boot Keys", "Exit Setup", then it would restart to a red screen, display this page and then I select "Install Default Secure Boot Keys". After that it would reboot like normal.

The problem is that now it would constantly show this screen during boot no matter what I do. Is there a way to fix this without sending my Surface back to Microsoft?

    Greetings Mark,

Sorry to hear about your Surface Pro 2 booting into the UEFI. I'd suggest putting your Surface in for exchange using the Self-Service page.

    Greetings Juan schinocca,

Thank you for posting to the Microsoft Surface community. I'm sorry to hear that your Surface Pro 2 will only boot to the UEFI screen. There's a few things we can try to get your Surface Pro 2 to boot back into Windows.

    1. Try the Two-Button Shutdown
    • With your Surface powered off, hold the Volume Up and Power button for 15 seconds. Once 15 seconds have passed, release the buttons. Wait 5 seconds then press the Power button to power on.
    • You can try this option a few times to see if your Surface will boot into Windows
    1. Run the battery completely to zero (0%) by leaving it on the UEFI screen until it shuts off.
    • Once it shuts off, press the Power button to turn it back on until it will no longer power on, give a battery symbol, or even light the screen.
    • Once it will not power on, connect the Power Supply and let it charge then try and power on the Surface Pro 2.

If your Surface powers on and boots into Windows, please download and install this KB.

If you cannot get your Surface Pro 2 to boot into Windows, please contact Surface Technical Support.

    Hi Ken645,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Community with your inquiry! We value the time you have taken to post and contribute. I am sorry to hear that you get the UEFI menu every time you power on your Surface Pro 2. I can certainly see why this is confusing and bothersome, so please know I will try my best to assist and guide you in the right direction.

Whenever you need to access the UEFI menu, you must press and hold the volume-up button on your Surface. For this reason, we ask you to please verify and test that the volume-up button on your Surface is not stuck and it is indeed working properly.

You can do several things in order to try this: accessing any video site, playing music to checking if you are indeed able to control the volume properly, and also testing the volume with the Type Cover and without the Cover.

If the volume-up button is working properly, please check the following:

    • Make sure you have all and latest Windows updates installed. Please manually check for updates and install all that are available:
    • **Desktop> Swipe for Charms> Settings> Control panel> Windows update> check for updates> install.**Restart between layers of updates, even if not prompted to.  Restart twice after the last update installs.
    • Additionally, try holding down the "Volume UP" and the "Power Button" at the same time for about 15 to 20 seconds.  It should do a reboot and if no activity, release and 'click' the power button one time.

If the button is indeed stuck, then we suggest you contact our Technical Support Team. Depending on what is most convenient for you, you can:

    1. Open a service request yourself, using our **Online Service Center**
    2. Contact our Technical Support team**here**

I am also including a support article that should be helpful:

We hope this information is useful! Please keep us posted and let us know what happens!

We are here to help and we will be looking forward to your response!

    Best Wishes,

Unfortunately I had no success with resolving the issue even with the assistance from Microsoft Technical SPT. Surface PRO has been returned to Microsoft and now awaiting the new one. Hopefully same issue will not occur again?

My Surface Pro 2 failed to turn on yesterday, after remaining on charge overnight.

It was not shut down overnight.

I was stuck with a black screen, and no combination of the power + volume button commands on the support site had any effect.

I noticed that the windows button was initially still responsive, causing the device to vibrate, but nothing else.

Due to this and the consistent heat being generated by the device, I assumed it was frozen, and attempted to shut it down, but no matter how long I help the power button, it didn't change.

The keyboard (touch cover 2) backlight still worked, and would even fade after inactivity.

I had logged a support request with Microsoft and organised a courier to pickup my device and return for service.

However, after leaving the device disconnected overnight, I have found that it will power on and functions normally.

This would lead me to assume that it was a software/UEFI issue, and not a hardware failure.

I have been unable to replicate the issue though any combination of locking the device, pressing the power button, or closing the cover.

Should I continue to return the device to MS, or should I proceed in the hope that this issue doesn't arise again?

I'm not sure what's going on here. But if I hit the power button to put the device to sleep, it won't wake up again. The only way I can get it to start back up is to hold the power button down to force a shutdown and re-power the device back up.

I checked the control panels power settings to be sure what the power button does, and it is on the defaults, which is sleep.

The shutdown options are also on default, which is "fast startup", "sleep", and "lock". Hibernate is not checked.

When I do hit the power button, I see the Type Cover 2 light up, but nothing else happens.

Anyone else experience this or have some solution?

Well, after digging around in obscure places on the internet, I stumbled upon a small article that talked about this problem. It turns out the fix seems to be going into the device manager and changing the power management settings of the Marvell wireless adapter. There is a checkbox that's on by default which says "Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power". I switched this off (unchecked), and restarted my Surface Pro 2. Once done, it no longer has sleep problems.
