Surface Laptop - UEFI Boot Loop

Hi,

I have a surface laptop that I got in the fall of 2017. Everything worked well until last week when I restarted the computer and now it only boots up into Surface UEFI.  When I select for the UEFI to restart it simply goes back into UEFI.  I saw int he forums that some have recommended pressing the power and volume up buttons for varying lengths of time.  In trying this the laptop always comes back to UEFI.

Has anyone else encountered this and know of a way to fix it?

Thanks!

    Hi, Nick G2302!

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We are sorry if you have to go through the troubles with your device looping into the Surface UEFI page during startup.

Force shutdown the Surface Laptop (1st Gen) to reset the hardware and clears all the cache and memory for the device:

    1. Press and hold the power button until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release the power button.
    2. Press and release the power button to turn your Surface back on. You should see the Microsoft logo.

If that doesn't work, here's how to make sure your Surface turns off completely:

Press and hold down the power button until your Surface restarts and you see the Windows logo screen (this about 20 seconds), then release the power button.

If that's what you did, please check for SSD Status Icon in the Surface UEFI screen.  If the device is unable to detect a bootable Operating System, you will see this at the upper-right corner of the page. If it is seen, kindly contact Microsoft Support to check for replacement options as this is a hardware issue already.

If you do not see this, please reset the device. Check these 3 forms of Reset below:

    Fresh Start:

Fresh Start is the least intrusive form of reset.

You will not lose any files or personal information.

You will need to reinstall desktop programs.

Fresh Start also ensures you have has all available updates once complete.

If there is an issue with Windows itself, the issue may still occur after a Fresh Start.

    Reset from Within Windows:

This option uses the devices Hard Drive Partition to reimage the device.

This option can delete personal data (You can choose Keep my files or Remove everything).

You will need to reinstall desktop apps.

You will need to run updates upon completion.

If there is an issue with the partition, the issue may still occur after the reset.

    USB Recovery:

This option reimages the entire device, including the partition on the hard drive.

It is the most complete form of reset.

You will need to back up your personal data.

You will need to reinstall desktop apps. You will need to run updates after completion.

If the issue occurs after a reset, then the root cause is very likely hardware related.

You will need to download and set up a recovery image on a USB drive. Open USB recovery link to get started. The information on what size and type of drive is provided at the destination page.

If this works, we highly encourage you to inform our Community by clicking on Yes or marking my post as an answer. This will help other members who may have the same issue as you. Otherwise, don't hesitate to update us so we can further assist you.

    Kind regards,

Do you see a disk icon upper right with an X or line through it? That usually

indicates that the SSD has died.

I just received a brand new Surface laptop and have never seen another screen but the Surface UEFI.  I tried all of these solutions.  I DO have a little box with an x in the top right corner of that screen.  Does that mean the new laptop is a dud?
