Hi,

I have a Surface Book which I think has faulty volume buttons as when I hold power and volume keys I can't get into UEFI nor can I reset the device with a USB as both need volume + and - keys.

The device is stuck on secure boot with the red bar and padlock key. Is there any other way to get into UEFI without using the volume key?

    Hi inanimate,

Thank you for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry to know that your Surface book's volume buttons stopped working.

You may try to boot the device to Windows Recovery Environment (winRE) by only using the power button. To do this, you will repeatedly turn your device off, then on:

    1. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
    2. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
    3. On the first sign that Windows has started hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
    4. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
    5. When Windows restarts, hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
    6. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
    7. Allow your device to restart into Automatic Repair and select Advanced optionsto enter winRE.

If device boot to winRE, you will follow these steps to take you to UEFI screen:

On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings, and then select Restart.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

    Hi Lavenia,

    Thanks for your response.

Have tried that but it immediately keeps going to the start up screen with the Surface logo with the red bar and padlock.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

We're sorry to know if the steps didn't help. I can't think of any other way to boot your Surface to UEFI screen other than that.

The Surface Book 1st Gen is one of our older devices and has reached its end of life, so options are limited.

    Hi inanimate,

You can also get there by going to Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup -> Restart Now

Note: The exact location may be a little different in Windows 10. Try searching for Advanced Startup from the Start menu if you need help finding it.

Once in advanced startup, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options> UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart

For the red bar\padlock issue, look here for the setting in UEFI you need to change -> Surface turns on but shows a red bar and an unlocked lock icon - Microsoft Support

    Hope this helps,

    Greg

    Hi,

The problem is that windows doesn't load at all. I can't get past the red bar/padlock.
