Hi - running Surface Pro 6 on successfully installed Win 11. Regularly update under settings and can do all updates EXCEPT Win 11 22H2... download and install freezes at 61% - message on task bar keeps popping up. I use the Surface Pro undocked and as well to utilize a second monitor at work - use a Surface Pro 3 docking station. I have heard that the docking station may have a driver that is conflicting with the update - but have no idea how to solve it. Solutions detailed would be great! I have run the update troubleshooter -- still won't update. Thank you.

    Hello Crema56,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Community. I'm sorry to hear about this issue on your device. I understand how frustrating it is to have such problem. I'll do my best to help.

If I may ask, when running the update, did you make sure that the device is not connected to any extra peripherals such as keyboard, mouse or its dock?

In the meantime, let's try renaming the software distribution folders on your device. In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt, then select Run as administrator from the list of options. Select Yes. Next, in the window that appears, type the following commands one at a time, including the spaces as shown. After you type each command, press Enter. Then let each command complete before you type the next command.

    • net stop bits
    • net stop wuauserv
    • ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
    • ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
    • net start bits
    • net start wuauserv

After all these commands are completed, close the Command Prompt window and restart your device.

Then, run the System File Checker in Windows

Let me know how it goes. I'll wait for your response.

    Regards,

    StevenK

Hi I ran through the steps but...

both the "ren" commands said "access denied"

I did check on "run as administrator"

Restarted ran system file checker and then Update 22H2 and again stalled at 61% installed.

Only peripheral attached was the surface keyboard cover and a generic mouse.

Any other thoughts I might try or a workaround regarding access denied when in administrator mode?

    Thank you again.

Thanks for keeping me posted, Crema56.

Glad to know that the update is running now.

Regarding your user account, to check if you have the admin rights, go to Settings app. Click on Accounts, go to Your info page. From there, you will see the account type at the top, right under your user account name. It should say Administrator.
