Surface Laptop 3 - Issue daisy-chaining 3rd monitor

I have a Surface Laptop 3, an HP E24d docking monitor, and an HP22er monitor. I want to daisy-chain the monitors together but I can't get the last monitor to work.

Here's my current setup: Surface Laptop > USB-C cable > HPE24d > IVANKY Active DP to HDMI adaptor > HDMI cable > HP22er.

From what I can tell the Surface can support 3 monitors with MST and the last monitor doesn't need to be DP. But between the laptop, the docking monitor, and the adaptor, I can't tell where the issue is.

What I've tried so far:

  • first I had this adaptor cable from Amazon which didn't work so I got the IVANKY
  • Updated the firmware and drivers on the HPE24d
  • Installed HP Display Center and Intel Graphics Command Center
  • Tried different input settings on the HPE24d (DisplayPort 1.2/1.1, DisplayPort MST On/Off,USB-C Configuration video+USB2.0/video+USB3.0, KVM mod On/Off)
  • Looked at installing updated Intel Iris Plus graphics drivers but Microsoft says it already has the latest version.

Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Clayton,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you’re having trouble daisy-chaining your monitors. Based on the information you provided, it seems that you have already tried several troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

We cannot guarantee that daisy-chaining a third monitor on a Surface Laptop 3 will work; Surface devices are designed to support up to two external monitors.

For troubleshooting guide, see Troubleshoot connecting Surface to an external display - Microsoft Support.

We would also leave this thread open for some helpful moderators or community members you have tried this set up, just in case they have better insight about this specific concern.

    Kind regards,

    Lavenia

Thanks for your response Lavenia. Sorry, maybe my title was misleading. I'm using the laptop screen and two external monitors. The second external monitor is the one I can't get working.

I appreciate you for clarifying. Based on the information you provided, it seems that you have already tried several troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. For daisy chaining monitors on a Surface Laptop 3. You will need to use a Display Port. Refer to the instructions in the article I mentioned above to learn how to daisy chain.

Since DisplayPort has more bandwidth than HDMI, using DisplayPort to DisplayPort will result in a better connection.

I figured out the issue. The 'active' DP to HDMI adaptor i bought doesn't support daisy chaining.

Instead I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S0C7QO8/ref=sw\_img\_1?smid=A3HIHADV23VGU1&psc=1

Just plugged it in and it worked right away.
