Surface Book 3 Nvidia GPU missing after resume from hibernation

Hi,

New problems continue surfacing with my Surface Book 3 (now I know why these are called 'surface' ;) ).

The latest issue: the nVidia discrete GPU disappears after resuming from hibernation. It is missing in the device manager, and it does not come back when I run a refresh there (look for new hardware). Edit: it did come back once after trying this another time.

If I undock and dock it back to its keyboard (also containing its nVidia card), it shows up and is usable.

Please advise.

Thanks.

GT

Thank you for posting your inquiry here in Microsoft Community, Dr. Gökhan Tolun.

I'm sorry to hear that the GPU driver disappears after the device wakes up from hibernation. Please boot the device to the UEFI settings (turn off the device > press the volume up then the power button for 15 seconds) and check if the dGPU option is enabled, once you are on the UEFI settings go to Devicesthen look for dGPU. If it is already enabled, disable it for a few seconds then back to enabled. Choose Exitafter then click Restart now.

If the issue still persists after restarting the device, run the steps below:

    - Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and make sure to complete the tasks.

    - Check for new Windows updates. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

    • Run the System File Checker.
    • Install the drivers manually.
    • Check the specific OS build of your Windows SettingsSystemAbout.
    • Download the driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Book 3 and click download on the next page.
    • Please choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.
    • After the download, runand installthe .msi then Restart the Surface Device.

Unfortunately, as I have experienced in these forums before, another canned response that does not make much sense for the case I posted.

May you have any actual suggestions related to my case that may be worth a try?

    Thanks,

    GT

Thank you for confirming. Undock and dock the keyboard to the screen until the GPU driver shows up again > Go to the Start Menu > Select Control Panel and click Hardware and Sound > click on NVIDIA Control Panel > Open Under "3D settings" go to "manage 3D settings" > Under "Preferred graphics processor" choose the "high-performance NVIDIA" > scroll down and find "Power management mode" and set it to "prefer max performance".

If the issue persists, try setting the Power performance to Best Performance. Go to the battery icon > Slide to Best performance and observe if the issue still persists. Setting the Power mode higher than Recommended will impact battery life, remember to lower the slider when no longer need the CPU performance boost when on battery.

May we also confirm the driver version of the GPU? Please go to device manager > Look for the NVIDIA GTX > Right click the driver > Go to properties > then go to driver tab.

    Dear John,

No, I do not want the nVidia GPU to be the preferred GPU. It should only be used when it's needed, as it should be.

The other suggestion, as you wrote, is about the CPU, and therefore, isn't it irrelevant to my GPU issue?

nVidia driver version is 462.59 (the latest one pushed by Windows update).

Looking forward to further suggestions to try.

    Thanks,

    GT
